I have hard time killing off my favorite characters, and I sometimes do that because I know readers are not expecting me to kill a nice or funny one.

Whenever I’m angry with someone…he is going to be part of one of my stories…and it won’t be a nice character.

Whenever I love someone, he is going to recognize his personality in some nice character.

I use names from great friends in my characters; it’s a way to praise them.

I cry and laugh while writing, I try to feel the characters’ emotions in order to write about them.

I come from an Italian family; we cry, laugh, and talk loudly, and I create similar characters with strong personalities.

I will never kill a dog in my novels; it would kill me.

My legal clients’ opponents inspire some of my characters.

Coffee is the fuel for my engine. I can’t write without drinking it. I like it strong, preferably espresso, and then I’m ready to kill the keyboard. I also think everybody likes coffee—it’s my favorite gift to give, along with coffee machines.

My imagination runs wild, and sometimes, I think characters live independent lives inside my mind.

“Yes indeed, my friend. I’ve seen a lot in my short life. I’ve bent over backward to please. I’ve been a puppet. That wasn’t for me, so one day I decided to stop.”

More than a hint of pain showed in her eyes…unsettling to find in such a young and beautiful woman. Who could have hurt her so much that she’d come to behave as she did?

“I know how it is,” I said. “It’s like apnea. What’s pleasurable at the start of relationships doesn’t last because it’s not real. You’ve decided to be real, once and for all.”

“Apnea?”

I’d finally said something that had surprised her.

“Yes. I like to go diving. Sometimes I dive without air tanks. I hold my breath. It’s called apnea and you can do it for only so long. At the beginning of relationships, people hold their breath. When they can’t do it anymore, they go back to being who they are and relationships end.”

“I adore that description.”
