Notorious crime boss Saoirse Kennedy finds herself entangled in a web of mystery when she receives orders to eliminate a detective and faces the resurgence of her haunting past.

In the midst of this city plagued by crime, Detective Lily Rose sets out to apprehend Saoirse, but their paths intertwine when a new, sinister force emerges, prompting an uneasy alliance to protect their city.

Saoirse looked up at the detective to find her staring at her in puzzled wonderment.

“What?” she asked.

“I…” Rose cleared her throat. “I wasn’t expecting you to be so forthright about admitting the note is from you.”

Saoirse shrugged and then looked toward the kitchen as her head swirled in another dizzy spell. “Any chance you have some snacks around? Energy bars or fruit? Cereal? And some… water.”

Rose watched her for a moment, contemplating her in silence, before she got up and headed out of the room. Saoirse allowed herself the luxury of closing her eyes, while still paying close attention to the sounds around her, lest the detective was going to make a call. But Rose was only gone for a moment, and the noises reaching Saoirse’s ears were only her steps and some cupboards as well as a fridge opening. A running tap, too.

“Here.” Rose was holding out a bowl of chocolate cereal floating in milk when she opened her eyes again.

“Thanks, Rosie.”

“That’s Detective Rose to you,” Rose said stiffly.

The sternness in her voice almost made Saoirse giggle with delight. She was going to be so much fun to tease. Knowing that right now was not the right moment to make the detective angry, Saoirse dug into the cereal instead of responding.

Rose watched her take a few bites before she asked, “So, what happened to you? Why are you in such rough shape?”

“Allow me to ask a counter question,” Saoirse said, looking up from her bowl of chocolatey goodness. “Why are you asking me here, in your own home, instead of the police station?”

Rose raised an eyebrow, and her upper lip tensed. “Would you prefer we go there right now?”

Saoirse tilted her head to one side, eyes fixed on Rose’s. The detective was annoyed, possibly erratic, but she wasn’t a fool. She had deliberately chosen to come to this place, and she wouldn’t change her mind only because Saoirse got on her nerves.

“I don’t put much stock into empty threats, Rose,” she said seriously. “And they don’t suit you. You’re better than that.”
