I don’t listen to music when I write. My “soundtrack” is usually whatever my husband has on TV. Golf, the news, or a random Discovery Channel doc I’m halfway ignoring.
I always write in first person present tense. It puts me deep inside the characters’ heads, especially important when writing high-stakes emotional scenes and intense attraction.
I hand-build every sibling dynamic from scratch. There’s no “one type” of Irish family. Each McGloughlin brother has a distinct relationship with the others, and that richness gets explored across the series.
Marcella is one of the most personal heroines I’ve written. We’re both lawyers. We’ve both dated younger men. And we’ve both struggled with body image in a world that doesn’t always make room for curves.
The food in this book is family-driven and deeply nostalgic. Irish stew. Paella. Fresh soda bread and arroz con leche. The kitchen is a character in its own right.
